Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Katugugu Muhwezi Wednesday said his next step after swearing in as Member of Parliament will be to help improve livelihoods of the people of Rujumbura and Uganda as a whole.
“When God gives you a second chance, use it maximumly,” Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi said during a luncheon he hosted at Sheraton Kampala Hotel for a select group of guests in lieu of Covid-19 protocols.
“In this tenure, I will focus more on helping to emancipate our people from poverty as well as work on improving their livelihoods,” he said.
He revealed that his return to parliament was occasioned after a group of over 300 from different sub-counties of Rujumbura – Nyakagyeme, Bugangari, Bwambara, Ruhinda, Buhunga, Bikurungu and Rwerere Town Council led by Kokunda Julius, met him in Nankulabye, Kampala in 2019 and requested him to consider offering himself again for leadership as Rujumbura MP for the years 2021-2026.
“After consultation with my wife [Canon Susan Muhwezi], I took the decision to stand again since there was justifiable demand for me to go back and serve the people,” he said.
Muhwezi, the National Resistance Movement -NRM party candidate got 25,799 votes to trounce his closest challenger, the Forum For Democratic Change’s Fred Turyamuhweza who got 20,556 votes. Others in the Jan, 2021 Rujumbura race, included independent Grace Muhoozi Mugisha who got 338 votes while Alliance for National Transformation-ANT candidate Sylivin Gumisiriza got only 232 votes.
Returning Muhwezi to Parliament required a concerted effort by his family, NRM Party, business friends and ‘Foot Soldiers’.
Among the top funders of Muhwezi was Ponsiano Ngabirano – the proprietor of Capital Shoppers Supermarkets in Kampala, Property Mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, William Byaruhanga, Martin Kitaburaza, Ben Kavuya and Amanya Mushega.
Mr. Muhwezi also revealed how he had first met Hon Amanya Mushega in 1979 and has since known him not just for ‘being NRM’ but also a principled friend.
“Some think Hon Amanya Mushega is not NRM, but he is NRM. He is one of my best friends whom I have known since 1979,” Muhwezi said.
Speaking at the same function, Hon Sam Kutesa, noted that the resolve by the people who urged Hon Muhwezi to stand again, was because they saw true leadership in him. he, however, added that “elections are over’, it was time to get to work.
Other guests who graced the luncheon included; Amb Adonia Ayebare, Prof Mondo Kagonyera, Andrew Mwenda, Hon Shartsi Kutesa and Mwesigwa Rukutana. Also in attendance were Property Mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Ben Kavuya, Bob Kabonero, Ponsiano Ngabirano among others.
