KIGALI – President Paul Kagame has issued a tough warning to people trying to destabilize the peace of his country, saying his Government is willing to increase the cost of those trying to tamper with it.

Speaking after swearing-in the newly appointed Army Service Chiefs including the Chief of Defence Staff, Reserve Force Chief of Staff, the Rwanda Defence Force Inspector General and the Deputy Reserve Force Chief of Staff, Kagame said they are going to make sure they have everything it takes to ensure security, stability of Rwanda.

Through the Rwanda Presidency twitter handle @UrugwiroVillage, Kagame scorned those hiding behind democracy and enjoying support from outsiders, noting that they will soon face the consequences of their actions like the perpetrators of the 1994 genocide.

President Kagame’s Statement as transcribed on twitter

“You are taking on these responsibilities at a time our country is entering a new stage of transformation. Your strengths, your abilities and your way of thinking will be part of this new journey. Everything we do aims to transform our country, and ensure that our economy and the living standard of every Rwandan continues to improve. Every country needs to have security. Where we are today, we have taken security more or less for granted. That was right that we could make sure the country is secure to the point that we can take it for granted. We will continue to take it for granted by any means.

We are going to raise the cost on the part of anybody who wants to destabilize our security. The cost is going to be very high, whether it is the means we are going to put to make sure we have everything it takes to ensure security, stability of our country. It is also the cost, mainly that those people who want to destabilize our country are going to incur, it is going to be a very high cost on their part. Absolutely. I mean it and you know that I mean it.

I want to warn some people among us who hide behind different things. They hide behind politics, democracy, freedom, that we actually want. It is our responsibility to ensure that there is a democracy, there is peace, there is freedom, there is everything in our country. Primarily we are the ones responsible first and foremost, we, me and you. For people who hide behind this nonsense and they are even backed and praised by people from outside, and enjoy it, you will see the consequences. For those who are involved, they better come clean very fast. You cannot be here benefiting from the peace and security that we have created, that we have paid for in blood over many years and then you do things behind our backs and cause us problems. We will put you where you belong, there is no question about it.

People who have been involved with the tragedy of Genocide and have continued to play that politics &ideology, they have gone to prison, they have come out and we have forgiven them for it. Then they start playing those games again, we will put you where you belong. Those ones who make noises about it, we will see what they will do. I am telling those who play games with this nonsense and want to put us back where we have been, and have left behind us.

When it is here, we are responsible, we are in charge, when it is outside, the noises being made by neighboring countries and beyond, that one there is not much I can do about it. The best way is to ignore it. But anything crossing our borders and coming here to destabilize us, we didn’t have to prove that we can deal with it, but we will prove that we can deal with it. We want to maintain that situation where we can take our security and peace for granted, we need it, we have needed it for a long time and we shall make sure it is there. Thank you again, I wish you success, and I commit my support to all of you in this journey we are on together. We are the ones to benefit from everything that we do.”
