KAMPALA – Former presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye and Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine have agreed an alliance that could pose the biggest challenge yet to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s 34-year rule.

A joint statement signed by both Dr. Besigye and Bobi Wine indicates that after their meeting on May 6, they have concluded discussions on key issues as they bring their political forces together against the incumbent, President Museveni.

“We took note that we are on the same mission to free Uganda from dictatorship and oppression. We agreed that despite belonging to different formations/ fronts, we must work together as partners on the same mission,” the statement reads in part.

Addressing the media at Floral Hotel in Wakiso, Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, who is the spokesperson of the ‘People’s Government’ led by Dr. Besigye alongside the People Power spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi on Wednesday said the two movements were not only focusing on ‘getting back the freedoms taken away from them by Mr. Museveni’ but would also carry out joint activities going forward.

“The alliance was focusing on getting back the freedoms taken away from them by Mr. Museveni,” Ms. Nambooze said.

On his part, Mr. Ssenyonyi noted that despite the two groups having different activities, they will continue working together.

“The two groups have different activities and we shall continue to work on them, but once in a while we shall hold joint activities,” he said.

His words were reiterated by the ‘People Power’ leader Robert Kyagulanyi who said that ‘being united was the only way we will get liberated’

After the press conference, the ‘People’s Government’ boss, Rtd. Col Dr. Besigye took to twitter and further re-assured Ugandans that ‘change was coming’.

“Change will come to our country! The greater and more numerous the obstacles, the greater the victory over injustice shall be!” Dr. Besigye said.

“Let’s stay the course; by God’s Grace and our untiring effort, we shall overcome,” he added.
