Ugandan Olympic athlete goes missing in Japan: officials

OSAKA – A Ugandan Olympic athlete has been reported missing to police after disappearing from his hotel at a training camp, the Japanese town hosting the delegation said on Friday.

In a statement, Izumisano city said 20-year-old weightlifter Julius Ssekitoleko who has been in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, for a pre-Olympic training camp, failed to appear by noon for his daily virus test and was not in his hotel room.

The Ugandan delegation was among the first teams to arrive in Japan for the Tokyo Olympics, which will open July 23 following a one-year postponement.

Two members of the team had tested positive for the coronavirus since arriving at Narita airport on June 19. Since then they were quarantined and only started training last week.
