KAMPALA – Uganda’s ministry of health on Thursday said it has registered nine new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 741.
Five of the cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases from Kyotera and Amuru districts, while four of the cases are truck drivers who were detected from the Malaba and Elegu points of entry. Additionally, 31 foreign truck drivers who tested positive for COVID-19 at Uganda’s points of entry were handed over to their countries of origin.
According to Dr. Henry Mwebesa, the Director-General of Health Services, Uganda has so far discharged 486 of the COVID-19 patients, after testing negative for the virus in two confirmatory tests conducted after treatment.
In a related development, Africa Tembelea has learnt that 37 centres where Ugandans returning from abroad are to be quarantined, have now been gazetted. Apart from institutional quarantine, all returnees will also have to undergo PCR Covid-19 tests prior and upon arrival in Uganda.
According to Ambassador Patrick Mugoya, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 37 quarantine centres in Uganda are located in Kampala and Entebbe, and are categorized into three – high end, medium-range and public facilities.
Among the high end are Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Apartments, Golden Tulip, Hilton Garden Inn and Ssanga Courts. Those in Entebbe are Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel, Lake Victoria Hotel, Protea Hotel, St. Steven Suites and Mowicribs Apartments.
The medium range include Askay Hotel, Central Inn, K Hotels, Migingo Suites, Pulickal Hotel and 7 Season Hotel in Entebbe. Those in Kampala include Arch Apartments, Douglas Villa Hostels, Evelyn Apartments, Rwiizi Arch and Nyumbani Hotel.
In the category of public facilities are Mulago Paramedical School, Lands and Survey and the Fisheries Institute.
Africa Tembelea understands that before returning to the country, the returnees will have to indicate their choice of quarantine centre. For those who opt to be quarantined in private hotels, will meet their costs.
