DURBAN – Uganda has emerged Best Exhibitor in the category of Southern African Development Community and Africa as a whole, winning gold at the 2019 Indaba Tourism Fair that concluded yesterday.
Ugandan Tourism minister, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu who received the award from President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, said the Pearl of Africa (Uganda) has demonstrated that it is a force to be reckoned with.
“I am happy that we are being recognized for our uniqueness,” Prof Kamuntu said.
Adding that, “This award is an illustration of what Uganda is like. We showcased not only our culture, but also our uniqueness, and the organizers were amazed by what Uganda has to offer.”
According to Lilly Ajarova, Uganda Tourism Board’s CEO, the feat shows that Uganda is now positioning itself to take its rightful place not just as a leading but also a preferred tourist destination in Africa and the world.
“We are elated to have won gold as the best exhibitor at this year’s Indaba fair,” Ajarova said.
Adding that, “This is a true testament to Uganda’s immense natural endowment and shows that the world is appreciating our tourism potential.”
Ms Ajarova who took over the helm at Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) in February, said that a lot of work had been put into the exhibition stall so as to ensure that it captured all elements of Uganda — like wildlife and cultural heritage — whilst also ensuring that the spacing enabled close interaction with the visitors.
Uganda which beat Namibia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the award, has previously won other global accolades at exhibitions such as ITB Berlin, Magical Kenya Tourism Expo, among others.
