A suspect who Uganda People’s Defence Forces – UPDF said had been killed in an armed robbery in Mutundwe has appeared at Nateete police station.
Wycliffe Ssesanga’s name appeared on the list of four suspected robbers who were shot dead in an operation conducted by Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence – CMI, UPDF and Local Defence Unit – LDUs.
Others were Lameck Mayanja a resident of Kabalagala, Dick Mugalu a resident of Muyenga and Ismail Ssegirinya, a resident of Kansanga, located in Makindye Division, in Kampala.
On Thursday, police at Nateete Police Station was shocked when Ssesanga surfaced without injuries on his body.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said Ssesanga was forced to go to the police after his vehicle was involved in the robbery. Ssesanga is currently being detained at Nateete Police Station.
Ssesanga saw the pictures when he had been summoned by the chairperson of YTK zone in Kansanga for delaying to pay his landlord. As he was still being asked why he was delaying to clearing his rent, a neighbour showed him pictures of his car a Toyota Wish registration number UBE 808F.
Onyango said Ssesanga alleges that his colleague Lameck Mayanja who was one of the suspects shot dead approached him on the fateful day claiming he had a client who wanted to hire a car.
The operation was commanded by UPDF First Division commander, Maj Gen Samuel Kawagga.
The robbery was reportedly planned in Kansanga and Mutundwe targeting a businessman who had put his house on sale.
Lameck Mayanja was a Special Hire driver stationed near Kabalagala police station. Ssesanga said he knew him as a quiet person who had never engaged in criminal activities.
CMI, Police and LDU are still hunting for three other suspects who allegedly escaped in another motor vehicle registration number UAN 386H a Toyota Calidina. Security forces picked among other exhibits motor vehicle UBE 808F, a Star Pistol, two bundles of fake dollars.
