KAMPALA – Police at Jinja Road are holding a man who is alleged to have stolen US$80,000 (over Shs300m) from a room at Speke Apartments, Wampewo where city socialite Don Zella, real name Sheila Nandege was staying.
Jeremiah Adome Ojok, 36, who booked R110 at the same apartments allegedly broke into room 107 at Speke Apartments and made off with money.
According to a press release issued by Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy PRO Kampala Metropolitan Police, CCTV footage recovered from the apartment on December 24, shows the suspect, accessing room 107 with another person yet to be arrested. The two are later seen leaving with items. Unconfirmed reports say the other person could be Don Zella’s sister identified as Hamidah Shanita.
Owoyesigyire explained that a sum of US$60,000 counterfeit money had been recovered from the suspect who was found with the money in Arua on Tuesday this week and it has since been exhibited.
The police PRO, further said that the suspect revealed that the exhibited money is what he stole from the room that the socialite had booked at the Apartments.
“Police are investigating these allegations. The police are also on the hunt for his accomplice, who was seen in the footage breaking into Room 107 at Speke Apartments.
“We call upon service providers to, at all time, monitor their security to avoid such incidents in the future,” Owoyesigyire said.
Don Zella had earlier on through her Lawyers Semuyaba Iga and Company Advocates dragged Speke Apartments to Court seeking compensation amounting to Ugx 461million for damages caused.
Africa Tembelea understands that the socialite has since pulled down her social media post after evidence emerged that alongside her sister and Ojok, the robbery could have been faked.
This development follows CCTV footage making rounds on social media showing how the three knew each other.
In the footage, Don Zella, her sister and the alleged thief are seen heading to the former’s booked room 107 (where the alleged theft took place) a day before. The same footage also shows Don Zella heading to Ojok’s booked room number 110 on Christmas eve.
Other sources also say that Don Zella was not even registered as having booked into the Apartments, among other points of concern.
The question on many people’s mind now is how the struggling socialite managed to ‘smuggle’ over Shs 332 million into the country considering that when one is to travel, there is a cap of US$10,000 (about Shs37,000,000).
