Minister Butime tasks Tourism Board to Fast Track Destination Uganda Branding

Kampala, Uganda – Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities minister, Col (Rtd.) Tom Butime has tasked members of Uganda Tourism Board of Directors to lead the fast-tracking of the sector recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

Col Butime made these remarks during the inauguration of the 4th Board of Directors of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.

“The pandemic has more less leveled the ground for competition and it’s now our duty to claim our due share of the market as all destinations struggle to rebuild themselves from the COVID-19 mess,” Col Butime said.

He urged the Board members to fast track the branding of destination Uganda, stating that there is no way the country can be positioned without branding.

“Every citizen must appreciate and promote the brand. This way, we shall turn all Ugandans into destination ambassadors,” the Minister said.

The 4th UTB Board of Directors whose three-year term of office takes effect today, September 30, 2020 is headed by Daudi Migereko, a graduate of Makerere University (BA with Diploma in Education), and University of California (MA in Transport Planning & Marketing). Migereko who is serving his second term as Chair of the Board, has a wealth of knowledge and experience from private and public service that spans over 30 years.

Other new members inaugurated today following cabinet approval on Monday, August 14, 2020, include Mr. Lyazi Vivian representing the ministry of tourism; Mr. Mwanja Paul representing the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Mr. Ronald Kagwa representing National Planning Authority, and Al Hajji Eng. Sooma Ayub representing the Civil Aviation Authority.

Retained from the previous Board are Mrs. Susan Muhwezi representing accommodation owners, hoteliers and providers of catering services; Mr. Chemonges Mongea Sabila representing Uganda Wildlife Authority, Mrs. Yogi Yewagnesh Mamo Biriggwa representing the Private Aviation sector; Mr. Eddy Kirya representing tour operators and Dr. Katende Suleiman representing the tourism sector (general).

Lillian Ajarova, the current chief Executive officer at Uganda Tourism Board (ex-officio) will serve as Secretary to the Board of Directors.

Today’s inauguration was also attended by the Ag. Director Tourism at the Ministry, Dr. Akankwasah Barirega, Uganda Wildlife Authority Executive Director, Mr. Sam Mwandha, Uganda Airlines Ag. Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Cornwell Muleya, Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre’s Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi and other partners.
