National Unity Platform Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrates Court in Iganga.
Kyagulanyi was released on a non cash bail of UGX 1million while his two sureties John Baptist Nambeshe and fellow member of Parliament Paul Mwiru were bonded at 5million shillings each.
The NUP presidential flagbearer was arrested on Wednesday as he tried to hold a campaign rally in Luuka district. Since then he has been in detention at Nalufenya Prison in Jinja.
Mr. Kyagulanyi is being charged with doing an act likely to spread infectious diseases, under section 171 of the Penal Code Act, which charges he has denied.
Led by Medard Lubega Segona, his lawyers have filed an application for their client to be released on bail.
In her ruling, the Magistrate said the accused had fulfilled all conditions to merit bail. She however, cautioned the presidential candidate to adhere to the Ministry of Health and Electoral Commission guidelines on Covid-19.
“The accused being a presidential candidate must adhere to the campaign guidelines set by the Electoral Commission and the Standard Operating Procedures set by the ministry of health,” Her Worship Josephine Nakato ruled.
The case was adjourned to December 18th, 2020 when it will return for mention.
