The Electoral Commission has announced the winner of the Jinja city Mayor seat after two days of vote tallying.

According to Jennifer Kyobutungi, the Jinja city Returning officer, the delay in releasing the election results was due to the breakdown of computers at the tally centre.

Kyobutungi declared Peter Okocha Kasolo, the National Unity Platform-NUP’s flag bearer as the winner of the race that attracted ten candidates.

Kasolo polled 11, 899 votes to defeat the FDC’s Frank Nabwiso’s 10, 398 votes.

Others in the race were; Mr. Robert Kanusu (NRM), Mr. Godfrey Tibenkana (DP), Ms. Rose Kalembe (ANT), Mr. Julius Zziwa, Mr. Jeff Bidandi, Mr. Joseph Bamwite, Mr. Joseph Agaba and Mr. Meddie Ntuuyo (all independents).

Kasolo, a comedian in the popular Swengere family who also doubles as a radio presenter at Baba FM, was however arrested with his supporters as they celebrated the win.

Africa Tembelea understands that they were briefly detained at Mafubira Police Station on Friday at about 4 am only to be released at about 10 am.

After his A-level education at Namasagali College, the 40-year-old mayor-elect, started out as a radio presenter at the defunct Kamuli-based Radio Empanga, before joining the defunct Bamboo FM.

His radio expedition later took him to Baba FM, Busoga One and back to Baba FM in Jinja city.

Three other Baba FM workers including Silina Kyakuwaire the news editor, Damulira Twhilii the programme director and Shamim Khani a presenter, have also been elected as councilors at the Jinja city council.
