Guns used in Gen. Katumba Wamala attack recovered – Police

Kampala, Uganda – The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech, on Friday, revealed that two SMGs and a pistol that were used by assailants in the attempted murder of Works and Transport Minister, Gen. Katumba Wamala and his bodyguard Sgt. Khalid Koboyoit, were recovered during an operation in Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb.

The attack along Kisota road in Kisaasi, Kampala on June 1, 2021 unfortunately claimed Gen Katumba’s daughter, Brenda Nantongo and driver, Sgt. Haruna Kayondo.

“We wish to further inform the public, that the task team actively investigating the double murder of Nantongo and Kayondo, and the attempted murder of Gen. Katumba and his bodyguard Sgt. Koboyoit has registered more success after they recovered the second killer gun from Namuwongo,” Lokech said in a statement.

According to Gen Lokech, the suspects who are cooperating fully with the team of investigators, led them to Juma Sserwadda, a chapati seller in Namuwongo.

Upon arrest, Sserwadda led the investigators to the home of Juma Saidi, a boda boda rider, in Namuwongo-Kanyogoga village, Bukasa Parish, Kampala.

“Saidi, who acts as a custodian of the weapons by the terror group, led the team to his poultry house, and removed two guns and a pistol that he had wrapped in a polythene bag and strategically buried underneath the ground,” revealed Lokech.

He further said that the two suspected killer guns, four motorcycles used in the planning, preparation and execution of the many plots, bomb-making materials, Al-Qaeda training manuals, several Western Union transfer receipts with foreign funders, T-shirts used in surveillance, mobile phones and an assortment of other exhibits including a pistol had been recovered.

According to Gen Lokech, the exhibits and evidence gathered from witnesses, both public and private Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footages, and Forensic Analysis were very consistent with acts of domestic terrorism and extremism.

“We are now processing them on charges of terrorism and the aggravated robberies committed at Nansana Cheap hardware stores, the Robbery and Murder at Ntake Bakery in Kalerwe, as well as the robbery and murder at Mpererwe Supermarket,” he said.

The DIGP also revealed that concerted efforts were ongoing to trace and establish the whereabouts of the overall coordinator Sheikh Abudin Hubaida Taheel Bukenya, who is on the run.
