American RnB Singer Mya to headline Jazz Safari

KAMPALA – American RnB singer, Mya jetted into the country on Wednesday ahead of the All Music Safari Concert slated to take place on Saturday, November 30 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

The annual festival that has in the years past given prominence to jazz and soul music will for the first time drop the use of the two music genres in the title to open up the celebration to different music styles and cultures such as rap, pop, reggae and of course soul and jazz.

Mya is widely recognized for her RnB musical prowess with several hit songs that speak to the soul like ‘Take Me There,’ ‘Case of the Ex,’ and ‘Girls Dem Sugar,’ which have achieved the status of timeless classics.

While addressing journalists on Thursday morning in Kampala, Mya who is visiting Uganda for her first time was ecstatic about the concert on Saturday.

“I am delighted to be a part of the All Music Safari concert. Thank you for welcoming us with open arms, we have been rehearsing very hard and we cannot wait to share with you all what we have been working on this weekend,” Mya said.

The Grammy-award winning artist could also note hide her desire for a tour around Uganda. She noted that she has read a lot about Uganda and thus can’t wait to see the country and meet the people.

“I need to visit the whole of Uganda but would want you guys to tell me where I should start from,” she said.

Veteran music promoter Tshaka Mayanja, the man behind the Jazz and Soul Safaris, will be marking his 30th anniversary in the music business, a proud milestone that has earned him respect and recognition amongst many.

On why Mya was chosen to headline the 30th All Jazz Safari concert this year, Mayanja, said they always consider the best that a particular artist has to offer.

“We always consider pedigree, how best the artist can entertain the audience and how many songs one has. I do alot of research for the artists I bring and this time round Mya fits it all.”

Sponsored by Johnnie Walker, the concert tickets will be available at the gate for UGX100,000 and Platinum/VIP at UGX300,000.

The American songstress, who will be performing in Kampala for her first time, will share the stage with home grown talent including Joseph Sax, Kenneth Mugabi, Myko Ouma among others.

– Who is Mya? –

Mya (born Mýa Marie Harrison) on October 10, 1979, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and actress. Born into a musical family, before entering the music industry she appeared on BET’s Teen summit. Signed in 1996 with inters cope records, she released her eponymous debut album in April 1998. A critical and commercial success, the album produced her first top ten singles that included it’s all about me, Ghetto superstar and Take me there.

The album continued to raise her profile and attained chart success worldwide, with the former garnering her first Grammy nomination. continue her rise to prominence in 2002, when she won her first Grammy award in the category for Best pop collaboration with vocals.

Taking a more active role in the production of her music, Harrison released her third studio album, the eccentric Moodring, in July 2003. The album produced the single My love.

Following a label change and a delay in her fourth Album, Harrison went independent and recorded two exclusive albums for the Japanese music market and these included Sugar and spice (2008) and K.I.S.S (keep it sexy and simple) (2011).

In between recording those two albums, she launched her own independent record label Planet 9. Now fully independent, Harrison continues to regularly release music.

Beginning in 2014, she released a trio of R&B (2014).  In 2016, Harrison released her seventh album, the Grammy nominated smoove jones.

Aside from a music career, Harrison branched out into acting; making her feature-film debut in 1999’s Thriller in too deep starring LL Cool J and Omar Epps. She continued to score supporting roles in films such as Chicago (2002), Dirty dancing (2004), shall we dance? (2004), and cursed (2005).

She has endorsed several brands such as cocacola, Gap, Iceberg, Tommy Hilfiger and motorola, Harrison’s contribution to music has earned her many accolades in the fields of pop and R&B music categories.
